“When the season for early potato starts, Andalusian potato is far superior in quality to that of late potato but we will have to see what the market does when the time comes”, explains Menendo Gómez, Sales Director since last October for the company from Seville.
This Andalusian company is the official distributor for the whole of Spain for the Dutch seed company HZPC. At the moment, the most important seed potato varieties being officially distributed by HZPC are: Monalisa®, Vivaldi®, Caesar® and Carrera®.
Additionally, Intersur produces and sells around 18 million kilos of edible potatoes grown in Cordoba and Seville. Their potatoes are grown on a total of 450 hectares, most of which is covered by GlobalGap certification.
The Netherlands and Germany are two of their most important export markets. The British market is not as big as in previous years because they have moved towards the potato from Israel.
“The lack of extra water for irrigation is creating a problem for the potato sector in Andalusia. Even though at the moment, rainfall is, as in previous years, allowing us to adequately maintain our crops, it has not been enough to give us any reserves that we can rely on in the case of serious droughts like the present one.”
