Advantages of a strong structure

The Los Arroyones company from Cordoba, which belongs to the Patatas Naturales Group, has a solid infrastructure that has transformed it into a permanent supplier for large-scale retail.

The company’s business activities are very diverse and include having their own cultivation areas, selling to wholesale, export, packaging, distributing potato seed, selling a wide range of formats and varieties and their latest venture, potatoes for microwaves, Pat Micro.

“We are able to work all year round because we use all the potato growing regions in our own country and those in Europe, preferably France. For the last nine years now we have held the certification that is currently known as GlobalGap. This strong structure, together with the quality of our products, has allowed us to become permanent suppliers for various Spanish supermarket chains”, explains Eugenio López Guisado, the Director of Las Arroyones.

On the other hand, the Director explained to Fruit Today euromagazine how he believes the frosts which have hit Israel could affect the season for early Andalusian potato: “In 2007, Israel exported around 360,000 tonnes of potato. This year I doubt they will reach 200,000 but its latest campaign will coincide completely with the one of early Andalusian potato. Israeli exports to Europe could drop by 50%. This may result in more demand in the European market for potato so prices will not fall. In addition, the area planted with early potato in Western Andalusia has been reduced by 15% which means we too will be putting less potato into the market.”

Andalusian potato has a unique quality differentiating it from potato from other areas because of its special flavour, high amount of dry material and its exceptional versatility in the kitchen.
