Andalusian potato, a fine product full of flavour

The distinguishing characteristics of Andalusian potatoes are being promoted in their most important market, Europe.

With a new name, announced in Fruit Logistica, the former Asociacíon de Productores y Exportadores de la Patata Temprana de Andalucía, now known under the English name of Producers & Exporters Andalusian Early Potatoes, the early Andalusian potato finds itself in the middle of an ambitious international promotional campaign that emphasises its unique, inherent characteristics.

The main growing area is located in the provinces of Seville, Cádiz, Huelva and La Vega de Córdoba, areas that have the best climatic and soil conditions needed to grow fine, top quality potato. Andalusian potato is harvested between April and June and is brought to consumers without any kind of preservation. It is distinctive because of its flavour, its freshness due to the fact that it has been recently harvested, its food safety levels – it is subject to the strictest quality controls- and its geographical proximity to European markets which means it can be on supermarket shelves within four days.

As it is the International Year of the Potato (AIP), the association’s image will be in evidence as a sponsor of one of the sector’s most important congresses, the Europatat Congress, which will take place in Bern, Switzerland in May.

On the other hand, there is an agreement with the FAO to circulate and spread information about the nutritive, cultural and social economic values of the product.

Potential production in the area is around 12,000 hectares which, according to the association’s President Mariano Ruiz, allows them to give an adequate response in terms of quantity and time to match the high client demands for supply.

The most important operators in the area belong to this association: Anpasol, Comercializadora Andaluza de Patatas S.L., Coprodur, Distifruits S.L, Distrisur Agrícola S.L., Eduardo Sanz S.L., Expat Andalucía S.A., Intersur Patatas Naturales, Knights of Spain S.L., Los Arroyotes, SL., Patatas Rubio Martínez S.L., Patatas Sánchez, Productos Agrícolas Andaluces S.L, S.C.A. Mancera and Southern Exports S.L.
