Patatas Aguilar: social and environmental commitment

As part of its company philosophy “The Natural Way”, this firm from Valencia chalks up another success by sponsoring a development project in India.

Social and environmental commitments are increasingly gaining more importance in Patatas Aguilar’s approach to business. The first is clearly evident in its concern with corporate social responsibility and its involvement in projects in the Third World. In this context, it has signed an agreement with the Vicente Ferrer Foundation in India to run a project “Developing uncultivated land”. When it comes to the environment, the company has, for some time now, adopted policies intended to minimise the environmental impact of its business and has made clear investments in reusable energy and water recycling.

Patatas Aguilar will finance 82% of the total cost of the project in India and 229 farmers belonging to the untouchable caste stand to benefit, as well as various other tribes in the region.

The land is located in Anantapur, a particularly dry region of the country which often suffers severe drought and monsoon rains.

Thanks to the initiative, these farmers, who represent one of the poorest communities on the planet, will be able to transform unproductive fields into a source of employment. In the seventies, the Indian government awarded around 5 acres of land to each farmer but the land is such that hardly one acre can be planted.

The company’s goal is to have around 5,000 farmers benefiting from this project in time. This gesture of solidarity will be put into action right in the UN declared “ International Year of the Potato”.
