The Regulatory Body for Valencia Citrus has now assessed the 2007-2008 season: they sold 14,350,656 kg of produce, a figure very close to the 14,328,943kg of the previous season where it also actually managed to almost double the volume of citrus certified compared to the 2005-2006 season which was a little over 7.5 million kgs.
The President of the Regulatory Body, Enrique Blasco, confirms “this consolidation is even more important when you consider that the citrus crop in the Valencia Region in 2007/2008 registered a 25% fall in production compared to the previous season”.
The Regulatory Body is made up of 7,043 growers with a surface area of 8,599 hectares on a total of 17,084 plots. Registered surface area has increased by more than 800 hectares compared to the 2006-2007 season.
With respect to prospects and targets for the current season that has just begun, the President of the Regulatory Body confirms, “we have to be ambitious and continue to increase our certified volume compared with last year and increase our contacts with retail to increase our market presence”.
Promotion
The PGI was present in the Asia Fruit Logistic fair in Hong Kong and the World Fruit and Vegetable Show in London together with the Regulatory Body for Persimmon from the Ribera del Xúquer, in the framework of the collaboration agreement that exists between the two bodies. This agreement allows them to carry out promotional activities together taking advantage of the fact that the season for persimmon coincides with the first part of the citrus season.
