For over two years, we carried out research studies to obtain melon for the fresh-cut business without any kind of additives, with trapezoid-shaped pieces and our aim is to maintain the taste and the texture of the best fruit. We look at ourselves as one more consumer and we were searching for a product that we would be happy to put on our own table”, affirms Celedonio Buendía, the General Manager of the company from Murcia.

“Piece fruits” was born from Procomel’s desire to diversify its products whilst maintaining the high quality for which they are renowned. “In accordance with our philosophy, “Piece fruits” has to be only fruit with the best taste”.

Finally, the project, which was given the go-ahead last summer, did just that. “Piece fruits” is 100% natural melon, chopped and packed using refrigeration as its sole method of conservation. It comes in formats of 150, 250 and 1000-gramme trays.

From this summer on the “Piece fruits” range will increase with different melon types, including a new variety that is not yet at the market. This one has a high brix level, excellent taste and it is very crunchy.

We take a lot of care to the fruit selection and the varieties development. “The key is: if taste it, you will repeat. Only in this way, the consumer can be satisfied”.

As with any product in the fresh-cuty range, maintaining the cold chain is fundamental. A temperature of between 4 and 7 degrees has to be maintained. Only in this way can “Piece fruits” be kept for up to ten days from its packaging date and still retain all its aroma and freshness.

The consumer profile for this new product is, according to Buendía, “anyone who appreciates a product with good flavour: I believe that Spanish consumers can be identified as the ones who want their fruit to really taste as it should and “Piece fruits” fulfils this requirements”.
